If Greek Mountain Tea is new to you, you’re probably wondering what exactly it is.
Despite its name, it isn’t actually a traditional tea like black or green tea. Greek Mountain Tea, also known as Sideritis, is an herbal infusion that has been enjoyed throughout Greece for generations.
It has a long history, a gentle flavor, and a special place in Cretan Embrace.
What Is Greek Mountain Tea?
Greek Mountain Tea is made from plants in the Sideritis genus, which grow naturally in the mountainous regions of Greece and other parts of the Mediterranean.
The stems, leaves, and flowers of the plant are dried and steeped in hot water to create a naturally caffeine-free herbal tea.
In Greece, you’ll sometimes hear it referred to as "Tsai tou Vounou,” which simply means “tea of the mountain.”
It’s the kind of botanical that has been passed down through generations and remains part of Greek culture today.
What Does Greek Mountain Tea Taste Like?
Greek Mountain Tea isn’t strong or overpowering.
It has a mild, earthy flavor with subtle herbal and floral notes. There’s a softness to it that makes it enjoyable on its own but also allows it to pair beautifully with other botanicals.
That’s one of the things we appreciated when creating Cretan Embrace.
We wanted a blend where you could experience layers of flavor without one ingredient taking over the entire cup. Sideritis gives us that earthy herbal note while allowing the gentle sweetness, citrus, and floral notes of the other botanicals to come through.
Why Has Greek Mountain Tea Been Enjoyed for Generations?
Long before wellness teas filled store shelves, Greek Mountain Tea was already being brewed in homes throughout Greece.
Traditionally, Sideritis has been enjoyed to support digestive comfort, respiratory wellness, and general well-being, particularly during the colder months.
It also naturally contains a variety of plant compounds, including polyphenols and flavonoids, that have been studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
More recently, researchers have explored Sideritis for other areas of wellness, including memory, attention, cognitive performance, mood, stress, and anxiety. Some results have been promising, although research is still developing, and studies using concentrated extracts aren't the same as drinking a brewed cup of tea.
That’s one of the things we find so interesting about botanicals. Plants that have been enjoyed traditionally for generations are still giving researchers something new to explore.
Why We Chose Greek Mountain Tea for Cretan Embrace
Greece will always hold a special place in our story.
It’s where the vision for The Rucker Romance Lifestyle & Wellness was placed on my heart, so when we began creating Cretan Embrace, we wanted our first blend to carry a meaningful connection to that experience.
Greek Mountain Tea gave us that connection.
But we didn’t choose Sideritis simply because it’s Greek. It also had to work in the cup.
Its mild, earthy character paired beautifully with the other botanicals we were bringing together and helped create the smooth, comforting flavor we envisioned for Cretan Embrace.
It became meaningful to the blend in two ways: for what it brings to the cup and for the connection it carries to Greece.
That’s how Greek Mountain Tea became part of our love story in a cup.
A Botanical With a Story of Its Own
One of the things we love about working with botanicals is discovering the history behind what’s in our cup.
Greek Mountain Tea has been enjoyed for generations before it ever became one of the seven botanicals in Cretan Embrace. Now, its story has become intertwined with ours.
And perhaps the next time you see Greek Mountain Tea (Sideritis) on an ingredient list, you’ll know exactly what it is and why this humble mountain plant has been treasured for so long.
